Résumé

Remembering the Dead memorializes victims of mass shootings in America. Mass shootings are gun homicides where four or more people are killed, not including the perpetrator. Victims of the most recent mass shooting are displayed first, followed by names randomized from a decades-long list. After its display, each name is added to the ever growing memorial in the background.

Designed as an act of remembrance, this work displays and speaks the names of victims in a temporary autonomous zone, defined and expressed through sound, technology, and your presence. In this temporary space, permanence is sought through hearing and reflection. Remembering the Dead assures these victims will not be forgotten.

These victims were sons and daughters, mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, friends, sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandsons and granddaughters, grandmothers and grandfathers. Some were unborn. All had their lives cut short. Remembering the Dead honors these victims, affirms their humanity.

Unfortunately, the killing continues. By collecting and curating victims' names I hope to increase awareness of gun homicide in America. By remembering the dead, I hope to prompt others, you, to speak out against this continued violence and loss of humanity.
